Dhaka, December 10: The genocide carried out by the fascist Awami League government during the July uprising is unimaginable. Every citizen of Bangladesh demands justice for this genocide. The government is committed to ensuring a transparent and impartial trial for this atrocity. Bangladesh aims to set a global precedent in holding such trials.
Advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Md. Nahid Islam, made this statement today at his office in the Secretariat when a delegation from the International Jurists Union came to meet him.
At the beginning of the meeting, the delegation was shown a video titled July Onirban, which focused on the July uprising.
Nahid Islam stated that, following the uprising, on August 5th, the autocrat Hasina fled the country. With no government in place for three days, many fascist supporters took the opportunity to escape. He further mentioned that the process of bringing the perpetrators of the genocide to justice has begun, and the collection of various evidence is in its initial stages.
When the delegation inquired about the timeline and process of the genocide trial, the advisor said that the International Crimes Tribunal would expedite the trial of the July genocide, following a transparent process that adheres to international standards. He emphasized that the trial would never be one of revenge, as justice means fairness. He also stated that all anti-fascist parties are united in their support for the trial. Additionally, he expressed hope for both domestic and international cooperation in advancing the trial process.
The advisor further mentioned that this trial is not only about establishing the rightful justice for the oppressed and the victims of the genocide in Bangladesh but also about demonstrating to the world the consequences of crimes against humanity. The international community is watching this process closely, and the interim government is taking this matter seriously. He assured that the government would welcome the advice, cooperation, and expertise of the International Jurists Union.
Members of the delegation commented that the genocide during the July uprising was a clear crime, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice. They expressed their moral support for the trial and said they were ready to provide full cooperation to the interim government in bringing the genocidal criminals to justice.
