Bangladesh-Thailand 2nd Foreign Office Consultations held in Bangkok

Bangkok, 2 March : Foreign Secretary (Senior Secretary) Ambassador Masud Bin Momen paid a courtesy call on the Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai at the latter’s office yesterday. They exchanged greetings on the occasion of the 50 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.

During the call on the Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and Foreign Secretary discussed issues of mutual interest and stressed the importance of further strengthening the existing excellent bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of the two friendly peoples. While apprising the Thai leader of the phenomenal socio-economic development of Bangladesh in the recent times, Foreign Secretary sought continued Thai support in order to cope with the post-graduation challenges from an LDC.

During the talks, Foreign Secretary requested the Thai leader for utilizing their friendship and influence on Myanmar for ensuring an early, safe and dignified return of the displaced Rohingya people whom Bangladesh sheltered temporarily on humanitarian ground. To this, the Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister assured of all possible support. Given Thailand’s leading role in ASEAN with growing engagements in Myanmar, Bangladesh urged Thailand to use its leverage in advancing effective engagement of ASEAN mechanisms in a fruitful manner in the repatriation mechanism.

Earlier, the Second round of Foreign Office Consultations between Bangladesh and Thailand held in Bangkok yesterday, in which the entire gamut of bilateral relations was discussed. Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh Masud Bin Momen and his Thai counterpart Permanent Secretary Thani Thongphakdi led their respective delegations.

To forge a Strategic Economic Partnership, both the sides underscored an early commencement of a joint feasibility study on the potentials of an FTA between Bangladesh and Thailand. The two sides agreed to create further synergies for a sustainable and inclusive economic recovery and development by properly implementing the Bio-Circular Green Economic model and the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan in the respective countries.

Both Bangladesh and Thailand agreed to celebrate the 50th year of diplomatic relations this year in a befitting manner the two Foreign Secretaries unveiled the official logo of the celebrations through a simple ceremony.

Both the sides agreed to hold the next meetings of the Joint Commission and the Joint Trade Committee as well as the next bilateral consultations. Press Release.
